Ascot target for smart newcomer No Hubris

PAUL COLE introduced a potentially smart two-year-old as No Hubris made an impressive racecourse debut in the Stratford Place Stud For Breeders Cup Winners EBF Maiden Stakes at York.

The 7-2 chance made all the running in the hands of John Egan, and kept on well in the closing stages to pass the post with two and a quarter lengths to spare over Flying Statesman.

Cole said: “We came here hoping he would run into a place, but at York you never know what you might come up against.

“It was nice to see him make all which is never easy here, so we expect a lot of improvement and the Coventry at Royal Ascot is an obvious target.”

Egan had earlier initiated a double on the Stewart Parr-trained Internationaldebut, who is owned by Newcastle footballer Joey Barton and his agent Willie McKay.

Neil Callan was suspended for three days (May 28,29, 30) for using his whip with excessive frequency on the short-head runner-up Everymanforhimself.

The first piece of the plan for Kayf Aramis (2-1 favourite) fell into place when he trounced his rivals in the two-and-a-quarter-mile theripleycollection.com Stakes, storming home by 13 lengths under Johnny Murtagh.

Trainer Venetia Williams explained: “The idea is to run him in the Cesarewitch later on and he needs to go up a few pounds in the ratings – he was rated 71 today and I think he will need to be 78 to get in.

“He is in at Goodwood next week and the handicapper will say we should run him but we will have to see – we may go to Royal Ascot and then give him a break before getting him ready for the Cesarewitch.”

The Easterby family has had some very smart sprinting fillies in its care and Anglezark is another expected to go on to better things following her success under David Allan in the European Breeders’ Fund Conditions Stakes.

Tim Easterby was delighted with the performance and said of his 9-1 winner: “She does not show a lot at home, there are horses which work better than her but she is very good and likes fast ground.”

Ryan Moore showed just why he is the champion jockey with a never-say-die ride on Crystal Capella, who marginally got the better of Dar Re Mi in the totepool Middleton Stakes.

Frankie Dettori went on fully a mile from home on the odds-on favourite Dar Re Mi with Crystal Capella off the bridle a long way out.

Dettori always seemed to be just holding the upper hand but Moore refused to accept defeat and forced his mount home by at short head at 15-8.

Dettori made amends on Dar Re Mi with a straightforward victory in the toteswinger Hambleton Stakes on Yamal.

Formerly with Mark Johnston, the 5-1 joint-favourite flourished in Dubai with three good runs at the Carnival, and his progress has obviously not stopped yet.

Dettori tracked Philario through until inside the final furlong where he was given the office and went away to win by half a length.
