Mister Top Notch can get off the mark on the level

MISTER Top Notch, now a nine-year-old, can enjoy a first ever success on the flat in the Denny Havasnack Race at Tralee this afternoon.

Mister Top Notch can get off the mark on the level

He has only ever run once on the level anyway, finishing a creditable second behind Larkwing at Galway last October.

The mile and six then would have been inadequate and this two miles and a furlong is likely to prove far more suitable.

Davy Fitzgerald’s charge is one of the best chasers in the country and will surely be all the better for his spin in the Kerry National at Listowel, finishing fifth behind Ponmeoath off top weight.

The Lee Strand three-year-old Maiden Hurdle is best left to the Lar Byrne-trained Mel Del, who made a good start over jumps at Galway earlier this month. Going off a 25-1 shot, not having shown much on the flat, she showed distinct promise at this game, taking second behind well-backed The Quiet Enforcer.

Willie Austin’s Conem has every chance of completing a hat-trick in the Ballygarry House Hotel Owen McGillicuddy Cup Handicap Hurdle.

He won twice at the Listowel Festival, scoring with what appeared to be any amount in hand on both occasions.

The handicapper has done his best, arguably, to get a handle on the eight-year-old, but he might well make light of a 20lbs rise in the weights.

The featured Denny Gold Medal Handicap Chase could be best described as a total puzzle.

Perhaps Dashing George, who jumped for fun when winning a beginners chase by ten lengths at Listowel, will go close.
