Master At Arms springs 12-1 surprise

IRISH raider Master At Arms sprung a 12-1 surprise in the Clean Concierge Handicap under Jerry O’Dwyer at Wolverhampton yesterday.

Mark Loughnane’s five-year-old had shown nothing on his last two runs on the Flat but bounced back to the form which saw him triumph at Wolverhampton last November.

Master At Arms was always travelling kindly for O’Dwyer and triumphed by an eased-down six lengths from the staying-on Swords.

“They went no pace and he just quickened into the straight,” said the County Tipperary handler.

“We just got the run of the race but he did it well.

“We are very lucky when we come to England and it’s a great result for all the lads at the yard, and the owner.”

Elegant Cad is likely to step up in class after landing the odds in the EBF Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

The 4-11 favourite made most of the running but subsequently had to show plenty of grit when strongly challenged by Layer Cake inside the final furlong.

John Best’s colt found extra inside the dying strides and held off the challenge of his nearest pursuer to score by a head under Seb Sanders.

Rocket Rob won the Clean Waste Solutions Nursery under a power-packed ride from Tadhg O’Shea.

Simon Callaghan’s charge pulled hard in the early stages and was sent into the lead entering the home straight. The 3-1 second favourite stayed on gamely to hold Josiah Bartlett.

David Thompson saddled his first winner of 2008 when Saameq claimed the Cleanevent Selling Stakes after almost a year off the track.

The seven-year-old has only ever won at Wolverhampton after a break of at least five months and turned this mile-and-a-half affair into a procession under Royston Ffrench.

The 9-2 shot was always travelling best and forged clear of the field entering the straight to score by a facile four and a half lengths from York Cliff.

James Bethell’s Wisdom’s Kiss landed his third win at Dunstall Park this year in the Stay At The Wolverhampton Holiday Inn Handicap.

The front-running A Big Sky Brewing and Bethell’s charge pulled clear in the straight, but the Jimmy Quinn-ridden 6-1 shot prevailed by three-quarters of a length.
