Jewel Of The West can sparkle

PAUL CARBERRY can consolidate his position at the top of the jockeys’ championship by landing a double at Bellewstown tonight.

Jewel Of The West can sparkle

He teams up with Jewel Of The West in the Champion Lettings Novice Hurdle and Noel Meade’s charge gets the nap.

You would have to say the selection had been more than disappointing, until getting his act together at Punchestown at the end of May. Nibbled at in the market, he buckled down in good style close home to beat The God Of Love and Kevkat by a short head and half a length.

Jewel Of The West was taking on older horses on that occasion and the form was boosted when The God Of Love won easily next time.

Carberry and Meade can also be fancied to take the Riverside Fiat Maiden Hurdle with the frustrating Rocket Boy.

He’s certainly not for the faint-hearted and the longer the Perugino gelding stays on the bridle the better. He did, however, seem to relish stepping up to three miles for the first time at Kilbeggan, beaten a length and a quarter by Rossgavand, and, hopefully, will arrive late and decisively.

The Bumper is probably best left to Willie Mullins’ Luca Brasi, who improved on previous efforts when easily dismissing moderate rivals at Kilbeggan.

At Gowran Park tomorrow, Plan gets a confident nap vote to in the extended nine furlongs Gowran Park Race. He is not favoured by the weights and has to meet Allicansayis Wow on 6lbs worse terms compared to a handicap.

But the chances are that the Storm Cat colt will leave his current rating well behind as the season continues to develop.

Plan ran a cracker at the Curragh last Sunday, staying on strongly at the end of a mile when fourth to Lisvale, and this lightly-raced sort has lots of scope for improvement.

Dermot Weld’s Chariya looks best in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fillies Maiden, having made a good start when beaten a length into second by the useful Grand Ducal at Tipperary.

At Limerick tomorrow, Willie Mullins’ The Boxer Coffey has obvious prospects in the Old Crescent Raceday Maiden Hurdle. He was a desperately unlucky loser at Ballinrobe last time, clear when Ruby Walsh and himself went their separate ways at the final flight.

Keys Pride, who found the trip too short and the surface too quick when a disappointing third behind Valain at Tipperary, could be seen in a better light in the Bulmers’ Summer Sundays Novice Chase.

Balakan, who likes to front-run and was an easy winner over flights at Listowel, is the one to beat in the Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound Beginners Chase.
