Nolan targeting new record in Stockholm

JAMES NOLAN will launch an attack on Marcus O’Sullivan’s national indoor record for 1,000m at tonight’s international indoor meeting in Stockholm.

O’Sullivan, three times winner of the world indoor 1,500m title set the indoor record for 1,000m at 2:20.2 in New York back in 1985 and now Nolan feels that he is in the shape to break it.

Not so long ago, the Ferbane man — a European indoor silver medallist over 1,500m — was all but written out of Irish athletics when he was dropped from the Irish Sports Council’s carding scheme. But he picked up the pieces and bounced back to feature in most of the major championships since then.
