Course experience to stand to Kandinsky
The chestnut son of Montjeu has raced twice and, following an encouraging fourth on his debut at Leopardstown, he ran a cracker against the well-supported Unwritten Rule in a maiden on the Saturday of the Festival here in early August.
Although it took time for the penny to drop that day, Wassily Kandinsky came from off the pace to deliver a strong challenge through the final furlong, going down by just a neck to the Dermot Weld-trained colt.
Although off the track for five weeks, Wassily Kandinsky sets a decent standard in today’s contest and, in maiden company, should not be unduly inconvenienced by a low draw.
The Ballydoyle colt is napped to open his account at the expense of the Weld-trained Final Flashback, far from disgraced when sixth to Frozen Fire at Gowran Park, and Kevin Prendergast’s Mutqen, which looks sure to improve from his debut run at the Curragh.
Summit Surge, off the track sine mid-June, when flopping in a race won by Lord Admiral at Leopardstown, gets a hesitant vote to land the Donnelly’s Of Barna Race for Ger Lyons and Johnny Murtagh.
Successful as a juvenile at Leopardstown, Summit Surge had earlier finished sixth to Irish St.Leger-bound Mores Wells in the ‘Ballysax’, also at Leopardstown.
Lyons’ charge would make short work of this opposition if reproducing his third (beaten less than four lengths) to Creachadoir in the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial, when he had subsequent stakes race winners Yellowstone and Admiralofthefleet behind.
Offbeat Fashion, which contested the Boylesports Irish 1,000 Guineas back in May and finished sixth to Baby Blue Eyes at Leopardstown in her only subsequent start, looks a potential threat, along with Warriors Key, which has been campaigning in handicaps and came close to big-race success here at the Festival when pipped by Hard Rock City.
