Carberry to return with a winner
Adrian Maguire’s eight-year-old comes here at the top of his game and is the one they all have to beat.
His latest outing was over two miles on the flat at Limerick 19 days ago, when Oscar Night could hardly have been more impressive.
Held up at the back of the field for most of the journey, he cruised through in the straight to score unextended by nine lengths.
Prior to that, the selection looked a very unlucky loser of a conditions hurdle at Kilbeggan. That contest was eventually won by Far More Serious, but Adrian Maguire’s gelding was cruising in second spot when crashing out at the penultimate flight.
Dermot Weld’s Hum The Tune gets the nod in the moderate Ray White Auctioneers’ EBF Median Auction Maiden.
The Beat Hollow colt was well fancied to make a winning debut at Thurles back in October, but could never get to grips with the relatively experienced Smarty Socks, going under by two and a half lengths.
He reappeared at Gowran Park in April, when seemingly unfancied in the market. Hum The Tune ran well enough to finish fifth to Eyshal and should be capable of squeezing home in a much weaker race.
Joe Crowley’s once-raced Degella appears the safest option in the McLoughlins’ Oil Bumper.
He made a solid start when three lengths runner-up behind fellow debutant, Made In Taipan, at Gowran Park.
It is hard to get a handle on whether that race was any good or not, but the fact there were long intervals back to the horses who chased home the principals was encouraging.
