Fallon back with a bang as The Bogberry does the business

KIEREN FALLON got a tremendous reception on his return to racing at Tipperary last night and then proceeded to give punters a real treat when getting up close home on his first ride back, The Bogberry, in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Race, writes Pat Keane.

Fallon was applauded all the way from the weigh-room to the parade ring, as he arrived for his first appearance in some seven months.

He, of course, had been banned by the French racing authorities for six months, having tested positive for a prohibited substance.

That test came at Chantilly on July 9 of last year when he tested positive for cocaine. Prior to last night, he hadn’t ridden a horse in public since partnering Yeats in the Melbourne Cup on November 7. His long-term future, one imagines, will depend on the ability to defend himself against fraud charges, which will be heard in London later this year.

“The reception I got was great, the people here are unbelievable,” reflected Fallon. “It makes your job that bit easier and gives you confidence.”

The Bogberry swept up late from an unpromising position to do the business and Fallon said: “Things didn’t go to plan.

“I was stuck behind two horses and had to go round them. But I have been riding him all winter, he’s a good little horse.

“I feel terrific and am very fit. I have been to Barbados and played golf every day. Everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve played golf. It is great to be back, I have been so looking forward to it. I have kept focused and have been riding four lots at Ballydoyle, then playing golf and going to the gym.

“I want to get back riding in England now and am confident I will be able to do that after this weekend!

“The season is only starting, I always think it starts with the Epsom Derby. I understand The Bogberry is going for the Chesham at Royal Ascot, I hope to be riding him.”
