Flood ‘hopeful’ of National repeat
Last March, the Fran Flood-trained gelding won by four lengths from Ossmoses but has yet to trouble the judge in four outings this winter.
However, Flood remains “hopeful” of a repeat victory in the extended four-mile mile handicap, for which 18 horses were declared.
“He’s in good form. He’s going over there to defend the title he won last year,” said the Co Wicklow-based handler.
“We’re hopeful of a good run. He’s been round there before. He’s got a bit more weight in it than he had last year, but we are still entitled to take our chance.
“We think he’s in good form and he’s definitely well in himself. Mick Fitzgerald rides him as Ruby (Walsh) has to ride Ladalko for Paul Nicholls.”
There are two other Irish challengers – Tony Martin’s Newbay Prop and Jaqouille, trained by Arthur Moore.
“Newbay Prop must have a chance as well. He’s a good staying horse,” added Flood.
Ladalko will have to defy the steadier of 11st 12lb after the weights went up 10lb at the overnight stage.
Nicholls also saddles L’Aventure, who makes a quick return to action after being pulled up in the Sporting Index Chase at Cheltenham on Tuesday.
All eyes will be on the Venetia Williams-trained Nil Desperandum as the 10-year-old attempts to consolidate his position as ante-post favourite for the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree next month following his victory in the Eider Chase at Newcastle.
D’Argent makes a quick reappearance after being pulled up before four out in the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Tuesday.
“He didn’t do anything on Tuesday. Basically, they were always going a bit too quick for him. He didn’t get competitive and ’Choc’ (Robert Thornton) pulled him up quite quickly,” said trainer Alan King.
