Nicholson remembered at awards

FORMER champion jumps trainer David Nicholson, who died in August, will be remembered in the Stud And Stable Staff Awards.

In recognition of his dedication to the tuition of young people in the racing industry, the newcomer section of the awards will now be known as the David Nicholson Newcomer Award.

Nicholson was a key member of the judging panel from the inception of the awards.

This year they will be held in London on February 20.

Brough Scott, chairman of the judging panel, said: “There was no greater advocate of these awards than David Nicholson, and commemorating ‘The Duke’ by re-naming the Newcomer Award is particularly fitting.”

Chris John, marketing director of the British Horseracing Board, said: “These awards have grown in profile over recent years and continue to recognise and reward the hard work and dedication of racing’s leading staff.”

The awards, now in their third year, remain the most valuable of their kind with prizes totalling £50,000.
