Go for Proud To Be Irish

PROUD To Be Irish can give us a big run in the Guinness Galway Hurdle at Ballybrit this afternoon. He represents a combination, Seamus O’Farrell and his son James, who may not be the most fashionable, but whom you underestimate them at your peril.

Go for Proud To Be Irish

Seamus has previously trained the winner of this race, Perugino Diamond six years ago, and James is one of the best amateur riders in the country. The selection first struck one as a live possibility when beating ill-fated Baltimore Hill and Zeroberto in a conditions hurdle at Roscommon in June, finding plenty for pressure in the closing stages.

Proud To Be Irish warmed up for this by finishing fourth on the flat at Killarney and the way he sees out his races, as well as being nicely weighted, plus his pilot’s 5lbs claim, sways me towards him.

There are, of course, numerous dangers, headed by Kinger Rocks. She has had a typical Dermot Weld preparation, coming here on the back of a smooth victory on the level at Listowel two months ago.

Jessica Harrington’s Gemini Lucy, capable of winging fences, will be worth watching in the Guinness Novice Chase.

She has produced two fine displays, at Punchestown and Killarney, and is fancied to confirm the good impression created then.

Davenport Democrat and Ruby Walsh look an irresistible combination in the St James’ Gate Novice Hurdle. The eight-year-old appeared on particularly good terms with himself when making all to beat subsequent Tipperary winner, Artiste Bay, 21 lengths at Roscommon.

The Bumper may be best left to Mustang McGarry, two lengths second to Medical Debenture at limerick. Medical Debenture went on to carry a penalty successfully at Tipperary.
