Irish flop in Nations Cup Super League

IRELAND’S show jumpers yesterday slumped to their second successive last-place finish in the Samsung Nations Cup Super League.

Irish flop in Nations Cup Super League

Competing in Rome, the team finished with 41 penalties in the nine-country competition. Britain, with 12 faults, denied the US its second consecutive win, the all-female American team scoring 16, with favourites Germany third on 20.

Ireland opened badly, with Capt Gerry Flynn (Bornacoola) notching up 16 faults. Harry Marshall and Ado Annie improved things with half that score, but Denis Lynch and Domingo also found the going tough, providing the discard on 20. Capt Shane Carey provided a modicum of hope when finishing with just five faults on Killossery.

It was a trend that, largely, continued in the second round as Flynn, Marshall and Lynch each had just four faults.

However, at that stage it was a lost cause and, following the opening round last place finish in France recently, Ireland go to Switzerland next week with a mountain to climb.
