Thornton caught out with mobile

JOCKEY Andrew Thornton was referred to Portman Square by the Aintree stewards yesterday after being found guilty of using a mobile phone outside the designated area.

The rider was returning to the weighing room after riding the unplaced King Revo when he was handed a mobile by trainer Pat Haslam’s wife, Ann, reportedly in order to speak to the owner.

Thornton quickly realised his mistake and gave the phone back, but the matter was reported to the stewards, who found him guilty.

Thornton is the first rider to be referred to the Jockey Club, the rules having been changed recently in order for the security department to investigate the matter further if required.
