Eddery breaks duck

PAUL EDDERY ended an 11-month spell without a winner by riding a 135 and a half to one double for trainer Derek Haydn-Jones at Southwell yesterday.

Eddery breaks duck

The brother of 11-times champion Pat struck first on Ermine Grey in division one of the European Breeders Fund Maiden Stakes.

Eddery had gone 332 days and 176 rides without a win until getting the 11-2 shot home by a neck from Five Gold in a one-mile contest for two-year-olds.

And he capped a memorable day by scoring on 20-1 outsider Bonny Ruan in the southwell-racecourse.co.uk Handicap over five furlongs.

Meanwhile, Andrew Balding’s Passing Glance took the Group Two warley-Oettingen Rennen over a mile at Baden Baden yesterday.

The Celebration Mile runner-up dominated his rivals from start to finish under Martin Dwyer and eased his way to a three and a half lengths win over Bear King.

Balding said: “I am delighted to have won my first race in Germany at the first attempt.

“I am really pleased. He has matured so much and just has become mentally stronger. All being well, we will now consider the Shadwell Mile in Keeneland in the beginning of October.”

Dwyer added: “They let me go off in front and we went a very strong gallop. I don’t think they realised that this horse just doesn’t stop.

“He was always travelling well and I knew that we would win it.”

Elsewhere, John Gosden’s Design Perfection belied her inexperience to finish a close third in the Listed Prix de Liancourt over 10 furlongs at Longchamp yesterday.

The winner of her only start to date at Newbury, the Manton filly went down all guns blazing and was only beaten a head and a short neck under Richard Hughes in the 13-runner contest.

Elie Lellouche’s progressive Actrice (Dominique Boeuf), challenged between Design Perfection and Visorama and landed a game victory.

Le Vie Dei Colori overcame a long absence to take the Premio Campidoglio over a mile in good style in Rome.

The Italian 2000 Guineas winner, who was sent off at 1-5, had little difficulty in reeling in Caluki and wasn’t all out to hold that rival by a length and a half.
