SJAI decides not to extend O’Connor ban

THE Show Jumping Association of Ireland (SJAI) last night decided not to extend the ban on Cian O’Connor to cover domestic competitions.
SJAI decides not to extend O’Connor ban

Following a meeting of its national executive, Chairman Charles Hanley said the association’s rules did not allow them to suspend the former Olympic gold medallist.

“According to our rules, we do not have a punitive case against O’Connor,” said Hanley.

“We are happy to leave the punishment as that given by the FEI [International Equestrian Federation].”

Earlier this month, O’Connor began a three-month ban imposed on him by the FEI after his horse Waterford Crystal tested positive for banned substances at the Athens Olympics.

However, because of the manner in which equestrian sport is governed in this country, the ban does not apply to national classes which do not come under the auspices of the FEI.

Last weekend, the 25-year-old rider won a class in Dundalk and placed fourth in the opening round of the national grand prix league.
