Glanceon target for Sussex
Passing Glance has been targeted at the one-mile Group One contest ever since he won the Vodafone Diomed Stakes at Epsom on his reappearance.
Balding, who reported that the five-year-old was working well, said: “He has won at the course, was beaten a head there in the Celebration Mile last year, and went down by the same margin in a Listed race as well.
“So Goodwood is his track and I hope he can perform well. I am really pleased with him, but it is a tough race.”
Aidan O’Brien has also revealed that Antonius Pius will be in the line-up.
These two join Refuse to Bend, Soviet Song, Haafhd, Nayyir, Tillerman and Le Vie Dei Colori as likely runners for the £300,000 feature.
Antonius Pius found six furlongs too short when seventh in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket earlier this month.
The Danzig colt had previously finished a good third to Azamour in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, having earlier been unlucky in the French 2000 Guineas when colliding with the rail with the race at his mercy.
Brunel, owned by a Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicate, will miss the race and will now be aimed at the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville.
Meanwhile Norfolk Stakes third Skywards heads a field of 14 for the Group Three Betfair Molecomb Stakes at the track tomorrow.
The Godolphin colt will bid to go a couple of places better in this five-furlong event after going down by a length and a quarter to Blue Dakota at Royal Ascot.
Bryan McMahon’s Dance Night was sixth in that race while the Richard Hannon-trained Spree was last and both reoppose here.
Siena Gold, winner of the Weatherbys Super Sprint, takes her chance for Brian Meehan while Tournedos, who was eighth at Newbury represents Mick Channon.
Bryan Smart’s useful filly Mary Read and David Nicholls’ Theatre Of Dreams both run along with Beckermet who is already a four-time winner this season. Bigalos Bandit, Distinctly Game, Royal Island, Safari Sunset, Kwame and Roodeye complete the field.
Goodwood continued its extensive watering programme today and the going is described as good, with the round course having good to firm places.
