Tralee racecourse could win reprieve

THE THREATENED Tralee racecourse may win a temporary reprieve from a new business plan to be tabled to directors tomorrow night.

Tralee racecourse could win reprieve

The Ballybeggan Park facility is under threat amid falling attendances and operating losses but a series of financial measures have been proposed by some company directors determined to keep the course open. They want to see the sale of the facility withdrawn from next week’s shareholders’ AGM and are recommending the sale of around 10 acres of prime land, worth around €3m, within the grounds, though not affecting the racetrack.

The plan also encourages new investors and a drive to attract more ancillary activities which will complement the existing facilities at Ballybeggan - equestrian facilities, conference and banqueting services, playing pitches and scope for circus/fun fair development.

“There is also a necessity to increase the attendance of paying customers - while overall attendance is increasing, the actual number of paying customers is decreasing year on year,” the report says.

It adds: “If Ballybeggan is to survive, it needs support not only from the business people of Tralee, but also from the ordinary punter. The opportunity to support must take place now before any final decision to close is taken.”
