Punter warned off indefinitely by Jockey Club

BRIGHTON-BASED punter John McCracken was warned off indefinitely by the Jockey Club yesterday at a hearing held in his absence.

The disciplinary panel met to determine whether to exercise its powers to exclude McCracken from any premises owned or licensed by the stewards of the Jockey Club.

This was in respect of his refusal to be interviewed by or co-operate with the security department regarding ongoing investigations into possible serious breaches of the Rules of Racing.

The exclusion order was sought against him under rule 2 (v) (a), which gives the panel the power to act against an individual whose presence is considered to be “undesirable in the interest of racing”.

The panel heard the evidence in McCracken’s absence as he declined to attend the inquiry in London.

They ordered that he be excluded from all premises owned or licensed by the stewards of the Jockey Club with immediate effect for an indefinite period. As an excluded person, he is barred from entering any of Britain’s 59 racecourses and any licensed training yards.

It is also an offence for any licensed or registered person to associate with him in connection with horseracing.

McCracken’s name has been connected with investigations into recent races featuring Ice Saint, Red Lancer and Tollbrae, the betting patterns for which all remain under scrutiny by the Jockey Club.

Club officials had been in the dark as to whether he would attend yesterday’s hearing, as he had reportedly dispensed with the services of his legal team earlier this week.
