Smart move for Murphy

IRISH telecommunications company Smart Telecom is to sponsor the North Yorkshire stable of Ferdy Murphy.

“It’s initially a one-year deal, with a rolling contract,” said the West Witton trainer.

“We are thrilled to bits - it’s a fantastic deal. It starts on March 9, so the timing is right for Cheltenham, where our runners could well be into double figures.

“Brendan O’Rourke, who owns Basilea Star, introduced us to the company and we took it from there.”

Meanwhile, Blue Square have been unveiled as the new title sponsors for the opening day of the Budweiser Irish Derby Festival at the Curragh on Friday June 24.

The interactive betting company will sponsor four races on the day including a new seven furlongs race - the Balanchine Stakes.

Curragh general manager Paul Hensey said: “We are delighted to welcome a new sponsor to the Curragh to join what is undoubtedly one of the high points of the racing year.”
