Alcazar can complete double for Morrison
Hughie Morrison’s veteran stayer has taken on the best this autumn, finishing fifth behind Melbourne Cup runner-up Vinnie Roe in the Irish St Leger and third to Westerner in the Prix Royal-Oak.
The nine-year-old faces nothing of that calibre in the totesport Willie Park Stakes at the Edinburgh track and should be able to grab the opportunity to get back in the winning groove.
The last time he ran in a Listed race he was successful at Nottingham back in March.
Although the Alzao gelding, whose career has been plagued by injury, is not quite up to winning at the highest level, he is still very useful and has the class to lift this two-mile event.
Morrison can make the long journey from Newbury pay off double style by winning the opening toteplacepot EBF Median Auction Maiden Stakes with Woolsack.
There was plenty to admire about Woolsack’s recent racecourse debut at Doncaster, where he finished fifth to Tasdeed over today’s distance of seven furlongs.
Asked to make all the running, he did not down tools when headed over a furlong out and was only beaten four and a half lengths at the line.
With the benefit of that outing, and a less demanding track, Woolsack can open his account.
However, the best bet of the day could well be Bond Boy in the totequadpot Handicap.
Bryan Smart’s sprinter also ran well on his latest start at Doncaster when a strong-finishing fourth to Matty Tun.
He has not won for two years but the handicapper has given Bond Boy a real chance now as he is on his lowest rating since he captured the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood in August 2002.
Koquelicot can continue to take advantage of a relatively low mark over hurdles at Kempton Park.
The six-year-old is rated much higher over fences thanks to four victories, although he was put up 12lb to 113 over hurdles after opening his account over the smaller obstacles in a novice event at Worcester on his latest start.
Adapting well to the brush hurdles, he stormed home by five lengths from Freydis.
Trainer Philip Hobbs obviously believes Koquelicot is still well treated and the Sunley Handicap Hurdle is there for the taking.
Golano can follow up a recent Stratford victory in the Countryside Alliance Novices’ Hurdle.
Paul Webber’s grey gelding defeated Chockdee by four lengths after showing promise on his hurdling debut at Uttoxeter, and more improvement should be forthcoming.
Say What You See created a good impression when getting the better of Salsalino by a head on his hurdling bow at Uttoxeter.
He looks as if he will be hard to beat in the South West Racing Club Novices’ Hurdle at Newton Abbot.
