Russell teams up with Examiner

THE opening stage of the Punchestown Festival this afternoon will mark the beginning of a unique and innovative relationship between the Irish Examiner and National Hunt rider, Davy Russell.

The Turf Club recently allowed jockeys to carry advertising logos and the Irish Examiner has wasted no time offering its support to the talented 24-year-old.

The newspaper is one of the first to venture into what is very much virgin territory, in a deal which will see the Examiner and Russell work together for the next 12 months. The Irish Examiner has long led the way in its sports coverage and has a deep commitment to horse racing. Supporting Davy Russell in this way sits comfortably with its sporting ethos.

Russell, one of the best point-to-point riders the country has ever produced, has made giant strides since turning professional. He is regularly in demand for a variety of trainers, including Michael O’Brien, Edward O’Grady, Willie Mullins, Tony Martin, Charles Byrnes and Pat Doyle and recently partnered the first two winners at Fairyhouse on Irish Grand National afternoon.

Said Russell: “I am delighted to be associated with the Irish Examiner, now that we are being allowed to carry sponsorship for the first time.

“It is tremendous the Examiner has come in to support me. National Hunt jockeys have a relatively short career and something like this is a real bonus.

“I am looking forward to publicising the Examiner for the next year. Hopefully, I will stay fit and well and you will see me carrying Irish Examiner logos all over Ireland. I am certain this will benefit both the Examiner and myself.”
