Galway aim for Dollars after easy win

DOLLARS ROCK, carrying the colours of the nine-member W G Hill Syndicate from Watergrasshill, Co Cork, streaked away with the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap at Limerick last night.

Galway aim for Dollars after easy win

The son of Cois Na Tine was produced with perfect timing inside the furlong pole by Chris Hayes to score going away by three lengths.

“He would be better on better ground”, reported trainer, Thomond O’Mara. “He may go to Leopardstown next Wednesday and Galway is the plan.”

Morning Glow, ridden by Mick Kinane for Declan Gillespie, took the ladbrokes.ie Handicap in a canter.

He made all the running and Kinane was pulling him up all through the final furlong. “He will go for another one of these type of races”, said Gillespie.

Morning Glow is by King Of Kings, which Kinane, of course, rode to win an English 2000 Guineas.

Baileys Best made a successful seasonal debut when taking the O’Connor, Murphy, Gubbins Median Auction Maiden. A son of another English 2000 Guineas winner, Mister Baileys, the Kevin Prendergast trained gelding battled on dourly for Brian Hughes to get the best of three-way tussle with the fast-finishing Colour Coordinated and the flattering Stylish Bid.

Mistress Bailey, she too is by Mister Baileys, won the Clohessy’s Bar EBF Fillies Auction Maiden for Prendergast’s nephew, Patrick. He has that good juvenile Waterways in his care and this is another useful two-year-old. Niall McCullagh had her out and away in a flash and she strode clear in the straight to score by three lengths.

“She had a bad experience at Naas first time”, said Prendergast. “She burst her head in the stalls and came home with blood in her lungs. She got a fright and has been hard work since.”

Cathy Gannon took no prisoners when winning the Ballyduane Stud EBF Fillies Handicap aboard Danehill Diamond.

She powered the mare into a clear advantage early in the straight and then kept her up to her work as Fire Finch attempted to close. A career over flights awaits Danehill Diamond later in the year.

Winged Arrow left a poor effort at Leopardstown previously well behind when turning in an impressive display in the 02 Customer Care EBF Maiden.

Ridden by the season’s leading jockey, Fran Berry, Winged Arrow kicked away in the straight to beat Lady Fonic by five lengths. The winner is trained by Charles O’Brien and owned by his legendary father, Vincent.

Pat Flynn enjoyed his first success of the campaign when Cepangie and Pat Smullen proved two lengths too good for Auburn Lodge in the McInerney Homes Handicap. Commented Flynn: “Pat rode her over a mile at Thurles and said to step her up in trip and she would do well. He was right.”
