Azamour sparkling ahead of Diamond tilt

AZAMOUR has been given a glowing report by trainer John Oxx ahead of his bid to capture the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

A ready winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot at York last month, the four-year-old is one of 16 possibles for the mile-and-a-half midsummer showpiece at the five-day stage.

The colt is a hot favourite at around 2-1 for connections who plundered the first prize two years ago with Alamshar, who carried his owner the Aga Khan's famous green silks to a three and a half length success.

However, this weekend will be Azamour's first crack at the distance as the son of Night Shift has yet to race beyond a mile and a quarter.

"He's fit and well and ready to go. He'll just go through his normal routine this week," said Oxx.

"We thought we'd try a mile and a half once and the King George is the race for it. We will find out on Saturday when he should get the fast ground he likes.

"We hope he will stay, but racing is littered with trainers and jockeys who believe a horse will stay and then being proved wrong.

"There will be some tough opposition out there. Grey Swallow looked good in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and is an Irish Derby winner so he's proven over the distance.

"If Bago returns to his Arc form then he will take some beating, as will Yeats if he reproduces his Coronation Cup run. His stable companion Ace was not that far behind us at York and the filly (Eswarah) is an interesting runner.

"It is boiling up into a very hot race."

Eswarah looks likely to be given the nod to take on the colts and older horses for the first time.

However, connections will have a look at the prospective opposition before making a final decision in the next couple of days.

"She's in good shape and she will need to be for the King George," said Angus Gold, racing manager to Eswarah's owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

"Sheikh Hamdan wants to have a look at the race and he may decide tomorrow or the next day.

"I would say that there's a good chance of her going to Newbury."

Jarvis advised punters to hold any wagers until the filly appeared among the final declarations for the race on Thursday. "We have confirmed her entry today and we will review the situation through the week. If we are happy with the filly, and Sheikh Hamdan thinks it is the right thing to do, she will run," he told At The Races.

"I would advise punters to hold on until she is confirmed at the 48-hour stage or, if they want to have a bet, do so providing the filly runs.

"She is fine, though, and Richard Hills rode her in work on Saturday morning. She worked a mile on the Watered Gallop and was full of herself.

"Everything she does she seems to do well within herself and she has got this tremendous burst of speed, which you don't see in many horses."

The unbeaten daughter of Unfuwain has already shown a liking for Newbury. She made a winning debut there in a mile-and-a-quarter maiden in April before returning to take a listed race over the course and distance the following month.

There was one horse supplemented for the King George yesterday at a cost of £60,000 Policy Maker, trained in France by Elie Lellouche.

The five-year-old was runner-up to Alkaased in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on his latest start, a race in which Arc de Triomphe winner Bago, the other French-trained acceptor, was third.

All the other leading fancies have stood their ground, with Doyen, a brilliant winner 12 months ago, left in by Godolphin.
