Five-time British Champion flat jockey Oisín Murphy is set for an historic homecoming at Killarney's July Festival.
A native of the town, Murphy has never ridden at the track competitively, and will make his bow on Tuesday, day two of the Kerry racecourse’s hugely popular festival.
Despite winning over 30 global Group 1 races across England, Ireland, France, the United States, Canada, and Japan and dominating the British racing circuit, Murphy has never previously ridden in a professional race at Killarney.
Based in England since taking out his licence, the Kerryman has only ridden eight winners in Ireland – four at the Curragh, three at Leopardstown and one at Listowel.
"Riding a winner at Killarney has always been a lifelong dream of mine," said Murphy. "I grew up watching racing here, and to finally ride here in front of my family, friends, and the home crowd is going to be an incredibly special moment.
"I hope I can give everyone plenty to cheer about."
Killarney Racecourse manager Karl McCay, commented: "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Oisín Murphy back to his hometown. Having a world-class, champion jockey born right here in Killarney ride at our track for the very first time is a massive honor. It is a very proud day for our community and local racing fans and will really add to our July Festival."
The five-day Killarney July Festival runs from Monday, July 13 to Friday, July 17.
