Mark English produced another strong performance to break the Irish 1000m record at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czechia on Tuesday evening, the Donegal athlete clocking 2:15.82 to finish sixth.
The race was won by Australia’s Peter Bol in an Oceanian record of 2:15.13, with English’s time taking over a half second off the national record of 2:16.40 set by Luke McCann in 2022. It continues a fine run of form for the 33-year-old, who claimed 800m victory at the Keqiao Diamond League in China last month in 1:43.85.
Sharlene Mawdsley was also in action at the Continental Tour Gold meeting, the Tipperary sprinter finishing third over 400m in 50.28, just shy of her recent personal best of 50.17, with victory going to Czechia’s Lurdes Gloria Manuel in 49.74.
Nick Griggs turned in a decent effort in the men’s mile, the Tyrone native finishing ninth in 3:52.81, less than half a second outside his best, with victory going to USA’s Nathan Green in 3:49.44.
Meanwhile Emma Moore took another step forward over 800m, the Galway athlete lowering her PB to 2:00.71 to finish ninth, with young Swiss star Audrey Werrro a convincing winner in 1:54.45.
Femke Broeders-Bol, the reigning world 400m hurdles champion who has moved up to the 800m this year, lowered her PB to 1:57.13 but came home a distant runner-up behind Werro, having matched the Swiss athlete until 600m.
Benjamin Richardson, who recently transferred his allegiance from South Africa to Ireland, clocked 15.14 to finish fourth in the 150m, where USA’s Noah Lyles set a world best of 14.67 – smashing the 14.92 mark set by Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson earlier this year.
