What you might have missed yesterday

Daniel Wiffen has described himself as “happy but disappointed” after adding a 1500m freestyle bronze medal to the 800m he won here in Nanterre to the west of Paris last Tuesday.

The USA’s Bobby Finke claimed gold with a new world record of 14:30.67, which beat by 0.57 the mark set by the controversial Yang Sun of China at the London Olympics in 2012.

The 23-year old Irishman had predicted that it would need a world record time to win this race after the heats on Saturday morning. He wasn’t wrong, but this wasn't the plan.

Shane Lowry has finished his fourth round on leve par for the round and five under for the tournament. He hit four birdies after a disastrous opening double bogey and finished the round with a bogey on the 16 and 18.

Rory McIlroy finished his round with a par on the 18 to finish five under for the day and -15 overall. After hitting five birdies in a row from the tenth to the 14th the double bogey on the 15th ended his challenge for a medal. He is currently sitting sixth overall.

Cathal Doyle finishes in 10th place in his 1500m semi-final ruinning a PB of 3:33.15 and will not progress into the final with just the top six going through.

Offaly's Megan Armitage has finished in 35th place in the Women's Road Race after a gruelling 158km. A brilliant debut from Armitage who took up cycling seriously in 2020 during lockdown.

Nicola Tuthill produced a fine performance on her Olympic debut in Paris today, the 20-year-old Bandon athlete unleashing a 69.90m effort in the women’s hammer throw qualification to finish eighth in her group and 16th overall.

Novak Djokovic gained revenge on Carlos Alcaraz in a pulsating men’s singles final to claim his first Olympic gold medal.

The Serbian first played in the Games back in 2008 but he arrived in Paris with only one bronze medal to show for his efforts and a burning desire to finally take his last chance to stand on the top step of the podium.
