Orla Barry and Deirdre Mongan pick up bronze medals

Orla Barry and Deirdre Mongan were the stand-out performers for the Irish team today at the IPC Paralympic Athletics World Championships in Doha.

Double Paralympian Orla Barry added to her medal collection when she threw a season’s best of 29.82 metres to claim a bronze medal in the F-57 Discus final this morning.

Meanwhile, Mongan also claimed bronze in F-53 Shot Put final after she was upgraded from fifth place.

The Galway athlete produced a best throw of 4.02 metres, but jumped from fifth to third after three nations lodged a protest over the illegal throwing actions of two of the medallists.

In the evening session, John McCarthy booked his place in the final of the men's T-51 100 metres as a fastest qualifier. He went on to finish 8th in the final with a time of 25.4 seconds.

And there was a sixth place finish for Hayley Fitzsimons her major championship debut in the F-40 Shot Put final.
