Smith was beaten on a split decision in an evenly balanced contest between the two, with the judges giving victory to the Russian by the narrowest of margins.

Earlier, Brendan Irvine got Ireland's account opened with a split-decision victory over top seed and home Azeri favourite Salman Alizada in his light-flyweight quarter-final.
