Federer opens tournament with win

Third seed David Ferrer opened his SkiStar Swedish Open campaign today with a comfortable 6-3 7-5 victory over Italy's world number 86 Fabio Fognini in Bastad.

Ferrer, who is bidding for his ninth ATP Tour title, will be joined in the quarter-finals by Italian Andreas Seppi, who edged past compatriot Potito Starace 6-4 3-6 7-6 (9/7) in over just over two and a half hours.
