Rain wreaks havoc at Roland Garros

Rain meant no men’s matches were anywhere near being completed by mid-afternoon on day five of the French Open.

The first four-and-a-half-hours play were completely wiped out at Roland Garros, with less than an hour-and-a-half of action taking place before a second rain delay.

Number six seed Andy Roddick had time to take the first set of his second-round match against Blaz Kavcic, the American leading 6-3 5-5 on Suzanne Lenglen Court.

Roddick, who survived a five-setter in his first-round match, held the edge even though his normally impeccable serve was malfunctioning badly.

He was broken four times in all.

Number 14 seed Ivan Ljubicic managed only one game of his match against Mardy Fish, the Croatian holding serve for a 1-0 lead.

Several other contests suspended last night were due to be completed today and the backlog forced tournament organisers to postpone a number of matches scheduled for later this afternoon until tomorrow.

They included four-time men’s champion Rafael Nadal’s second-round meeting with Horacio Zeballos.

Gael Monfils, Marcos Baghdatis and John Isner were all still waiting to resume their matches from yesterday.
