Third seed Elena Dementieva was a 6-4 6-1 winner against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands , unseeded pair Anna Chakvetadze and Alisa Kleybanova defeated Spanish wild cards Virginia Ruano Pascual (6-4 6-3) and Silvia Soler Espinosa (6-3 6-4) , and eighth seed Nadia Petrova was 6-0 2-1 up against Iveta Benesova when the Czech retired with a viral illness.

In other matches today, 15th seed Zheng Jie of China overcame Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-4 6-4 while Virginie Razzano of France battled to beat Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-0 4-6 6-3.
