Murray launches Qatar defence

The 2009 ATP World Tour season may be only two days old but Andy Murray begins his defence of the Qatar Open against Albert Montanes today with a pair of impressive wins already under his belt.

Murray dispatched world numbers one and two Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, respectively, last week en route to the World Tennis Championship title in Abu Dhabi, and the fact it was only an exhibition tournament will not diminish the confidence boost it provided.

Now the British number one must ensure he makes the most of match practice opportunities in Doha as it is his only competitive action before the Australian Open, which starts in two weeks’ time.

Being knocked out of the men’s doubles yesterday – he and Ross Hutchins lost to Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round – may be a blessing in disguise as the 21-year-old can fully focus on his bid for a maiden grand slam title.

“That’s what I’m aiming for,” said Murray. “The victory (in Abu Dhabi against Nadal) was good before I go to Australia.

“I have never been past the fourth round there. I trained hard over the break and the victories over the past three days have given me confidence. I know I am closer to winning that grand slam title than I have ever been. I’ve proved I can win against these guys."
