Nevin beats African champion in Bantamweight heat

Ireland's John Joe Nevin has beaten African champion, Abdelhalim Ourradi of Algeria, in his heat of the Bantamweight 54kg competition.

The first round saw no score for either contestant, but the second round saw the Mullingar man lead 3-2.

However, Nevin conceded two points in the third round after a warning from the referee for holding.

This was soon cancelled out though, as the referee issued the Algerian with a similar warning to make the score 5-4.

Another shot from the Irish man gave him a two-point lead which he increased in the final round to eventually win 9-4.

Nevin will now meet 2007 World silver medallist and Asian Championships gold medallist Badar - Uugan Enkhbat of Mongolia in the last sixteen on Friday.

Twenty-three-year-old Enkhbat convincingly beat Mexico's Oscar Valdez 15-4 in the final bout of today's session in Beijing.

Irish captain Ken Egan and John Joe Joyce will both be involved in last sixteen bouts on Thursday.

Darren Sutherland and Paddy Barnes both received byes into the last sixteen and will be in action on Saturday August 16.
