Routine win for Federer

Roger Federer began his 10th attempt to lift the only Grand Slam title he has not won with a routine straight sets victory over 20-year-old Californian Sam Querrey at Roland Garros.

The world number one was rarely extended as he eased his way into the second round of the French Open with a 6-4 6-4 6-3 triumph.

It was the perfect opener for Federer to hone his clay court game and especially his timing against a 6ft 6in American who serves big but struggles with his consistency.

Federer did suffer one break of serve in the first set in the fourth game when he persisted in sending his big forehands wildly long, but he also broke the American in the first and fifth games.

Federer began to show signs of his true form in the second and the big forehand down the line to win the set was an example of what he will need if he is to break Rafael Nadal’s stranglehold on the tournament.

Another huge return saw the 12-time Grand Slam winner break Querrey’s serve in the seventh game of the third set and he completed an untroubled work-out in one hour and 35 minutes when Querrey pushed a forehand long.
