Venus facing Jankovic test

Venus Williams will aim to succeed where her sister failed this evening as she targets a place in the US Open semi-finals.

Serena Williams was knocked out by top seed Justine Henin last night, ending the prospect of an all-Williams contest in the last four, but Venus could set up her own clash with the Belgian tonight.

But before thinking about Henin, 12th-seeded Williams must first move past third seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia at Flushing Meadows’ Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The match will be the third of the remaining three quarter-finals to be played tonight following Henin's success.

Jankovic has only advanced past the quarter-finals of a major twice, the first time being in New York last year.

Yet even though she has enjoyed nowhere near the success of six-time major-winner Williams, Jankovic has defeated her American opponent in both of their previous grand slam meetings.

Williams, however, is playing her best tennis since her victorious Wimbledon run earlier this year.

Now recovered from the wrist injury that sidelined her for two months, the two-time US Open champion is yet to drop a set in the tournament. Her most recent victim was Jankovic’s fellow Serbian Ana Ivanovic.

In the other two encounters Svetlana Kuznetsova takes on unseeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay while fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze meets Shahar Peer of Israel.
