Roddick races through
Former champion Andy Roddick stormed into the fourth round of the US Open with a straight-sets demolition of Sweden’s Thomas Johansson.
Roddick maintained his 100% record against the 2002 Australian Open champion with a 6-3 6-2 6-0 victory at Flushing Meadows.
And that will give the fifth seed a major psychological advantage if the pair meet again in three weeks when the United States take on Sweden in Gothenburg in the Davis Cup semi-finals.
Roddick, who next will play either ninth seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic or Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, could face top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Earlier on Saturday, fourth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko became the first man to reach the fourth round at the year’s final major with a 7-5 6-0 7-5 victory over 28th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.
Davydenko, who has dropped a total of 21 games through three rounds, awaits either number 19 seed Andy Murray of Britain or Korean Hyung-Taik Lee.
