Hewitt prevails to survive scare
Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the third round of Wimbledon today after prevailing in his one-set shoot-out with Hyung-Taik Lee.
The match resumed this afternoon at two-sets all after bad light brought a halt to proceedings last night.
And it was the Australian who kept his nerve to secure a 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 victory and a meeting with Olivier Rochus.
The bulk of the drama happened yesterday evening.
Lee took the first set on the tie-break and after Hewitt had levelled, served for the third at 6-5. A typically combative Hewitt broke back however and then saved three set points in the tie-break, reeling off five points in a row to win it 8-6.
The sixth seed then looked set to seal victory when he served for the match at 6-5 in the fourth, but lost his serve and the subsequent tie-break 7-5.
It was always going to be difficult for the players to regain the same intensity when play restarted 16 hours later.
Lee seemed to struggle more than his opponent.
Hewitt held three break points in Lee’s first service game but the Korean raised his game to hold firm.
It went with serve until Hewitt made the decisive move at 5-4, wrong-footing Lee with a forehand winner which brought up two match points.
It only took one, Lee dumping a forehand into the net.
