Murray could miss Davis Cup tie

Andy Murray is a doubt for Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Serbia and Montenegro after suffering an ankle injury.

The 18-year-old will hope for good news later today on the sprain he suffered during last night’s three-set defeat to Stanislas Wawrinka at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami.

However, Murray admitted it could be bad news for team captain Jeremy Bates ahead of the World Group play-off match at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena over the weekend of April 7 to 9.

“Well, I can’t really say just now because I’ve just finished, but I think tomorrow morning when I wake up it will be a little bit sore,” Murray declared.

“I brought my ankle brace, so it would have been a pretty bad sprain if I wasn’t wearing it. I just have to see if I’m going to be okay to play in the Davis Cup.”

Murray went over on an ankle during his 7-5 3-6 6-4 first-round defeat to his Swiss opponent, who also beat him in Davis Cup play last year.

“I don’t think it was too bad. I just think that when something like that happens on one of those courts, you just are a little bit cautious about moving on it, because the courts are quite sticky,” said Murray.

“When you’re having to change direction a lot, it is kind of difficult.

“I didn’t feel like I was going to go over it again, but I just felt like I didn’t want to have to make that movement again.”

Murray, as British number one, would be a certainty to face the Serbo-Montenegrins, and the squad is expected also to contain Greg Rusedski and Arvind Parmar, with Jamie Murray, Andy’s brother, also a possible for the doubles.

It remains more than likely that Andy Murray will be fit to compete and the Scot is eager to be involved, recognising the tie on an indoor carpeted surface as one the British team should win.

“I’d probably say if you look at the two teams, we’ve got a stronger team depth-wise,” he said.

“I think if everybody plays well on our team. We’ve got a good chance of winning.”
