Roger Federer looked in ominous form as he coasted through to the second round of the French Open on Monday with a straight-sets victory over Israel’s Dudi Sela.

Federer, the world number one, wrapped up a convincing 6-1 6-4 6-0 success in just one hour 29 minutes and will now take on either Nicolas Almagro or Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Another pre-tournament favourite, Spain’s Rafael Nadal, also advanced following a 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 defeat of Lars Burgsmuller from Germany.

Fourth seed Nadal won Masters Series events in Monte Carlo and Rome in the build-up to Roland Garros and maintained his fine form against an opponent ranked 96 in the world.

Other winners on day one included Mario Ancic, Carlos Moya and home favourite Sebastien Grosjean.

Ancic overcame Marcos Daniel 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7-4), Moya won an all-Spanish battle against Alberto Martin 5-7 6-1 6-4 6-2 while Grosjean defeated Juan Monaco 7-5 6-3 6-1.
