Spadea shocks Schuettler

Vince Spadea remained in unchartered territory by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon by beating an error-prone Rainer Schuettler.

Spadea prevailed 6-4 6-2 6-3 against Schuettler, who put Britain’s Greg Rusedski out in the previous round, and will now face either Sjeng Schalken or Thomas Enqvist.

Schuettler, the eighth seed, was his own worst enemy with 34 unforced errors - more than twice as many as the 29-year-old Spadea who has only won this many singles matches in a Grand Slam event on three previous occasions.

His best appearance at a major tournament was five years ago when he reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open.

He had never advanced past the second round at the All England Club before this year.
