Rusedski return well-timed
Greg Rusedski prepared to end his drugs nightmare by saving Great Britain’s Davis Cup blushes in Luxembourg today.
The British number two was due to end his three-month absence from the game by starring alongside Tim Henman at the National Tennis Centre.
The pair are unbeaten together in all Davis Cup matches and ought to fancy their chances against Gilles Muller and trainee fireman Mike Scheidweiler.
But Rusedski could hardly have picked a more vital time to return with the match balanced at 1-1 after the first day of their Euro-African Zone clash with the continental minnows.
It had taken Henman to lift his side out of an almighty hole after Arvind Parmar lost the opening rubber 4-6 7-5 3-6 6-4 6-4 to Luxembourg’s number one Muller.
It was Parmar’s fifth consecutive Davis Cup defeat but Britain’s debuting captain Jeremy Bates praised the Hertfordshire man’s performance. Bates insisted: “Arvind played a great match and did everything except get that bit of luck which you need.”
