Cowan backs Rusedski to bounce back

Greg Rusedski’s former Davis Cup team-mate Barry Cowan believes the British number two is capable of “one last hurrah” at Wimbledon.

Greg Rusedski’s former Davis Cup team-mate Barry Cowan believes the British number two is capable of “one last hurrah” at Wimbledon.

Rusedski was cleared of a doping charge yesterday when an independent tribunal decided his positive test for nandrolone was the result of a failure by the ATP to notify him personally about the risks of taking electrolyte supplements which the governing body’s trainers had been supplying.

Cowan, part of the Davis Cup team which beat Ecuador in 2001, said: “I am delighted for Greg to be exonerated.

“He was hounded by the press in early January and was forced to make a statement, so it is fantastic news for him and his career.

“Greg has proved his innocence and I think that it is important that he is left to carry on with his tennis career and have maybe one last hurrah, possibly at Wimbledon.

“Let’s hope now it can be the end of the chapter for him.”
