Sampras wins fifth US Open title

Pete Sampras won his fifth US Open title and 14th Grand Slam with a 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-4 victory over long-time rival Andre Agassi.

Sampras looked to be cruising to victory as he overwhelmed a tired-looking Agassi in the opening two sets, dropping his serve just once in the process.

But in the third set, Agassi surged back to win 7-5 with a barrage of his trademark passing shots while Sampras began to look tired.

In the fourth, that trend continued with Sampras struggling to hang on to his serve and he was nearly broken when Agassi missed a seemingly easy volley that would have made it 3-1.

But Sampras then found new reserves of energy as he held for 2-2 before later claiming the crucial break to go up 5-4 and then serving out to win.
