Wind improves for Ford Cork week

The mood of the wind gods had changed for the penultimate day of Ford Cork Week when they decided to give the exhausted sailors a little more wind.

Sailing to-day took place in a nice easterly breeze of 10 knots.

Speaking with Eddie English of International sailing Cobh who was sailing in IRM Class on Flirt he said today was beautiful sailing with the luxury of the race being able to start on time without having to wait for wind.

However, they did have to abandon the first start when the wind shifted and created a huge bias on the line which would have created mayhem amongst the fleet.

At the second start everybody got away cleanly and and sailed several miles out to the Old Head of Kinsale and back again, some twenty miles of a course.

Eddie is typical of the sailors who have been involved in Ford Cork Week since its inception and said it is wonderful to be meeting up with old friends again.

These are sailors who would live and compete all over the world and some of them would have known one another for 25 years.

Tomorrow will see the climax of racing and in particular spectators will be able to enjoy the sight of the High Performance Yachts as they will be in action on the harbour course.

This course is known to the local sailors as "round the cans" and it is quite a sight to watch the boats manoeuvring round the marks in very tight areas.

Some of the sailors from other countries will never have experienced such a course.

On this course local knowledge is all important and a lot of the visiting skippers will have local expert tacticians such as Eddie English whispering in their ear as they compete in their last race of the event.

Excitement is at fever pitch among all the classes.

Outstanding prestigious trophies are up for grabs plus the excitement of the award to the boat of

the week and the awarding of the magnificent prize of a trip to New Zealand for the GBR Challenge for some lucky sailors.
