Wimbledon: Henman through to the third round
Tim Henman has just beaten his fellow Englishman Martin Lee in straight sets to go through to the third round of the Wimbledon tennis championships.
Henman made a ruthless start in the battle of the Britons when he took the first set against Lee 6-2.
The two Brits are practice partners as Davis Cup team-mates but it was Henman handing out all the lessons as Lee appeared to be overwhelmed by nerves on his first appearance on Centre Court.
Lee won just one point in the first two games, Henman cashing in on a string of unforced errors to break the Worthing man’s first service.
And while Lee eventually began to settle down in a tense Centre Court atmosphere Henman broke again in the eighth game with the help of a Lee double fault to take the set in 29 minutes.
Henman was made to work a little harder at the start of the second set as Lee’s game gained some rhythm and momentum.
But Henman’s power and precision was still in a different class, as you would expect from a number six seed playing a man ranked 130 in the world, and the inevitable first break came in the fourth game with a flurry of blistering groundstrokes.
For the most part it was routine, uninspiring stuff with the crowd restrained and respectful but rarely roused to applause.
To his credit Lee held Henman at bay and the rest of the set went with serve with the Oxfordshire lad taking it 6-3 to take a two sets to love lead.
Final result:
T Henman 3-0 M Lee
6-2, 6-3, 6-4
