Australian Open: Kournikova falls to Davenport

Anna Kournikova found Lindsay Davenport too hot to handle in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

The Russian was beaten 6-4 6-2 by the defending champion in Melbourne.

Davenport's victory sets up a repeat of last year's semi with fellow American Jennifer Capriati.

Eighth-seed Kournikova began the brighter of the two but that lasted for only a few minutes.

The Russian, still to win a tournament in her entire professional career, was broken in the fifth game and from that point on Davenport appeared to have lots in reserve as she made the final four for the 10th time in the last 13 grand slam events.

Kournikova had actually beaten Davenport in three of their previous eight meetings, but their only other grand slam clash was on the same court in the fourth round a year ago - and the American won that 6-4 6-3.
