It isn’t all big lenses and state of the art camera gear for photographer Brendan Moran at the Olympics.

Since the games began, Moran, a member of the three-strong Irish photography agency Sportsfile team in London, has been compiling a photographic diary of his travels using nothing more than his iPhone.

A selection of his work, published, illustrates a different side to life in the English capital over the past three weeks. And it is a medium which the Tralee man has quickly grown to enjoy.

“Basically we in Sportsfile have been embracing social media more and more with Facebook and Twitter accounts and now a new app,” Moran explained.

“Coming to the games we had this plan to take a selection of pictures on an iPhone camera. It started out as a bit of novelty but has mushroomed from there.

“There often can be a similarity and sameness about much of the photography at something as big as an Olympic Games. With everyone corralled in together it is extremely difficult for photographers to get something really different which stands out from the crowd.

“But the great thing about this iPhone project is that it allows you try things you wouldn’t normally attempt. It is very individualistic and I have been experimenting with shots in black and white or with sepia tones. Ironically we are using the latest technology to produce the old style look of what was achieved long before the days of digital, with a simple roll of film. I have been trying to do a picture every day, relating to an event of the day. Some work, some don’t but that is the fun of it all.”
