Moriarty returns for cycle cup

Irish international Eugene Moriarty returns from illness to compete in the 22nd Annual Gene Moriarty Cup Cycle Race in Listowel on Sunday, (1pm).

The 70-mile event, promoted by the Listowel Cycling Club is in memory of his grandfather, one of Kerry’s top grass track cyclists of the late 1940s and early 1950s and a respected administrator.

Philip Cassidy, bidding for an elusive third title, is amongst an impressive field which also includes, Vincent Gleeson, Philip Finnegan, Denis Lynch, Mark Quigley, John Horgan and Craig Sweetman. The Kerry flag will be flown by the Earl of Desmond squad and the Concannon brothers from Killorglin. However, last year’s winner Aidan Crowley from Midleton with the backing of his Lee Strand Cycleways team-mates - Cassidy, Finnegan, Moriarty and Stephen O'Sullivan is favourite to retain his title.
