Wimbledon exit for rising star
Farron-Mahon, the unseeded 18-year-old from Dublin was defeated in straight sets by American Donald Young, the Australian Open Junior champion.
The Irish teenager, ranked 57 in the ITF U18 world rankings, recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Russia’s Pavel Chekhov on Monday.
Yesterday though, he had no answer to the power and pace of the 15-year-old who is already being hailed as a star of the future.
Having established an early break to take a 3-1 lead, Young cruised through the first set without conceding another game and extended his run by claiming the first two games of the second.
The second seed’s service game began to falter, giving Farron-Mahon some brief hope. But Young quickly recovered and eased into the next round, 6-1, 6-4.
Young said afterwards that his ambition is not simply to be the top gun of his generation but to surpass his idol, Pete Sampras. “I want to win all the slams more than once and become the No 1 player in the world,” he said.
“I really like playing in front of crowds so I enjoyed it,” he said following his first round win.
“It will take some time for me to get used to the grass again and feel comfortable but it’s okay for now.”
