Derval's fans welcome home their golden hero
She will also enjoy the boost of an increased Irish Sports Council grant following her Moscow success.
ISC chiefs have increased her annual grant by 25% under the performance incentive scheme linked to the International Carding Scheme.
This will be a welcome bonus in addition to the $40,000 prize she won in Moscow.
ISC chief John Treacy described the 24-year-old Cork athlete's performance as outstanding.
"It is great to see an Irish athlete deliver a big performance at a championship event," he said.
The new Chief Executive of Athletics Ireland, Brendan Hackett, said Derval's victory could hardly have come at a better time with Irish athletics going through a restructuring process which is now at an advanced stage.
"It is a fantastic boost for the sport," he said. "It sends out a really positive message to all the people involved in athletics at all levels.
"It is fantastic news for people in clubs who would have seen Derval O'Rourke starting out as a 10-12 year old working her way up through the ranks.
"She is coached by a home-based coach, she went to college here in Dublin, she went to UCD initially on scholarship and then when she finished College DCU offered her some part-time hours. So really there is a strong message there for people who are involved in all levels of the sport in Ireland.
"One thing you can always say about athletics - it always delivers medals. Some people were thinking when Sonia finishes what are we going to do for a couple of years and it was immediately followed up by Alastair Cragg and David Gillick at last year's European indoor championships and now Derval this year. Athletics just seems to do that every couple of years - we just keep producing world and European medallists," added Hackett.
"We have an exciting group of young athletes coming along and this gold medal sends out a really strong message coming up to a summer when we will have a European outdoor championships in Gothenburg where we will be looking to build on this success."
There was criticism from Derval O'Rourke's coach over the cutting of her grant last year, the difficulty she had in getting funding and the fact that Athletics Ireland had to make a strong case for her this year before she got money.
"Initially, when you look on the surface it might seem crazy when you see somebody at that level but the Sports Council have been hugely supportive of Athletics Ireland and particularly this year," Hackett said.
"We have got three-quarters of a million [euro]. Athletics is a sport which does not generate any income. We don't have championships where thousands of people turn up to watch and so we don't take in any money from spectators or TV money, so we are very reliant on the Sports Council and they have generously funded the association this year.
"There is also another half a million [euro] given towards the high performance side of the sport. In Derval's case, the funding would come directly in the form of carding but we would also have money there to send her to competitions and her coach has got some personal expenses to accompany her, so while on the surface it looks like a small amount, in general there is quite a bit there.
"When we send teams away we send coaches, managers, doctors, physios and that is all paid for by the Sports Council. Carded athletes also have access to specialists.
"When Derval gets an A time - when she actually qualifies she will move up to another level of funding - and we would expect that she will get an A time this year. We will always say you'd love to see more coming to sport because it generates such positivity when good news stories are few and far between.
"It is a huge cause for satisfaction for her coaches, right back to John Sheehan and Seamus Power at Leevale who coached her through her formative years. She is somebody who came through the club structure, the schools structure, got an Irish University scholarship, was coached by an Irish coach, helped by a former Irish athlete, Sean Cahill - she has totally availed of an Irish system."
Congratulating Derval O'Rourke, the Irish Sports Council said her performance entitled her to a performance incentive payment under the terms of the 2006 International Carding Scheme, representing 25% of the annual grant.
